A major problem with many run-of-the-river irrigation schemes is that water demand often does not match the unreliable streamflows of rivers. This problem is particularly acute in basins that support paddy agriculture, which requires a very high water allocation. The climate change projections of the Fifth Assessment Report of the IPCC suggest that these problems may be exacerbated in the future.
In this article, we develop a user-friendly hydro-meteorological interface for the Bernam River basin in Malaysia. The interface allows the rapid simulation of rainfall and temperature sequences derived from large-scale climate models. These data are then downscaled to the local scale and fed into a validated SWAT model. The model is then used to explore the impacts of different emission scenarios on seasonal streamflow in the Bernam River basin.
