Cartagena is a swanky Caribbean paradise that is not only a beach destination but is also rich in history. The city is home to a surplus of historical buildings and ancient sites such as the Palace of the Inquisition and the Cathedral, which have shaped and molded Cartagena into what it is today. It also houses museums such as the Museo de Oro Zenu, which showcases gold and silver artifacts, and the Choco Museo, where you can learn about Colombia’s famed chocolate.
In addition to the historic city center and beaches, Cartagena is full of other things to do and see. You can explore the Walled City, visit one of the many parks (which are filled with trees, flowers, statues, ponds, fountains and birds), or simply stroll down any of the main streets and take in the architecture. It’s a beautiful place that never feels old or overcrowded and is always a pleasure to walk around.
If you’re into shopping, Cartagena has everything from big name stores to boutique and local shops. The swanky new Portobello area is also a must-visit, as is the chic neighborhood of Getsemani, where you can rub shoulders with the fun-loving cool kids and backpackers.
There is a strong sense of community here in Cartagena that you won’t find in most other places in the world. The people are friendly and welcoming (although some may try to take advantage of foreigners, especially out at bars and restaurants, so be careful). Many expats will choose to live in neighborhoods like the affluent Bocagrande or the slightly more residential Manga, both of which are a short taxi ride away from the action in the historic district.
Most retirees love the fact that there is plenty of public transportation in Cartagena. Buses, taxis, motor scooters and bikes all share the roads and are cheap and easy to use. Taxis are even equipped with GPS and can be booked through your hotel, which is a godsend. The fares are incredibly low and the buses and Ubers are clean.
The city is a golfer’s paradise with several courses including the beautiful Jack Nicklaus-designed TPC at Karibana. There are also plenty of other recreational activities, including snorkeling, sailing, biking and playing tennis.
