The resurgence of amateur bodybuilding has drawn hundreds of Australians to Thailand on steroid holidays. Their aim: to bulk up and become a better version of themselves. It is a trade that comes with grave health risks – including life-threatening heart damage and liver disease – but also one that is lucrative for those willing to risk prosecution at home by buying steroids overseas.
Rather than buy their equipment from a fitness chain or visit a local gym, they head to Thailand, where pharmacies sell some of the same brands at prices up to 10 times less than on the Australian black market. As well as supplying the drugs, Thai pharmacists often talk their customers through the process of’stacking’ a variety of performance-enhancing drugs to get the results they want.

The word’steroid’ is often misused to mean any performance-enhancing drug, but they are actually synthetic hormones that closely work like a natural hormone in the body to control body systems such as anti-inflammatory, fluid balance and activation of the immune system. Many common medical drugs are steroids – such as insulin for diabetics, cortisol to reduce inflammation in accident victims and various forms of birth control.
Excessive use of steroids can result in a range of side effects, including hair growth (yes, it does make you go bald), high cholesterol and a decrease in sperm count that can lead to sterility in men. Most of these are reversible, but others, such as breast growth in women and impotence in men, cannot. Steroids Thailand
